What is Urine Test for Gonorrhea Test?

Gonorrhea is a very common sexually transmitted disease which is caused by bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It affects both men and women, but it is more commonly found in men. Gonorrhea spreads through vaginal, anal or oral intercourse with an infected person.

Symptoms of Gonorrhea in men:

  • Pain while passing urine
  • Pus or abnormal discharge from penis
  • Pain or swelling of testicles

Symptoms of Gonorrhea in women:

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Pain while passing urine
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding between periods, such as after vaginal intercourse

  • A urine based test to detect DNA of the bacteria using PCR method , also called as NAAT is a very sensitive technique to detect gonorrhea. The other option is to take a swab from the urethra in males and vagina in female and culture the bacteria.
