Detection of bacterial DNA using PCR method is the diagnostic test of choice since this is most sensitive (Nucleic acid amplification test or NAAT)
The serology tests (ELISA / EIA) that detect antibodies may be used as screening tests.
The long term effects of Chlamydia, if untreated may be
- Cervicitis
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- infertility
- Blocking of the bartholin glands
- Epididymitis in men
