Chlamydia trachomatis, commonly called as Chlamydia, is the most common sexually transmitted infection on the planet. This is easily treatable with the use of antibiotics like doxycycline, azithromycin, ofloxacin etc

The diagnosis of Chlamydia is often missed since there are either no signs and symptoms or if present these are very mild in nature, in the early stage of the infection. If left untreated, the following symptoms may occur

• Painful urination


• Testicular pain in men


• Vaginal discharge and low abdominal pain in women


• Painful intercourse or bleeding during intercourse


• Discharge from penis in men

Detection of bacterial DNA using PCR method is the diagnostic test of choice since this is most sensitive (Nucleic acid amplification test or NAAT)

The serology tests (ELISA / EIA) that detect antibodies may be used as screening tests.

The long term effects of Chlamydia, if untreated may be

• Cervicitis


• Ectopic pregnancy


• Pelvic inflammatory disease


• infertility


• Blocking of the bartholin glands


• Epididymitis in men
