COMMON FEMALE HEALTH ISSUES

We, the ladies, are natural ‘care-givers’ and ‘nurturers’. While we go about following our instincts, we often tend to neglect ourselves and our bodies. In the long run, we end up paying a huge price for this.

Compared to males, females undergo far more hormonal changes month after month. Their systems too, are far more complex. It is obvious that they should keep a close eye on their patterns, so that, if anything is out of place, corrective action may be taken sooner than later.

Following are five simple checks that you need to be aware of as far as your reproductive and sexual health goes.

1. Menstrual Cycle :

A cycle of 28 to 30 days is considered normal. Some of us may have slightly longer or slightly shorter cycles. This is also ok. Do keep track on the regularity of your cycle. Any deviation from the normal cycle in the form of duration, frequency, the character of discharge, amount of discharge or any associated complaints must be discussed with a doctor.

2. Pelvic Pain:

Pain in the pelvis (lower abdominal area) could be occasional cramps as during menses or more intense indicating a pelvic disorder such as endometriosis, uterine prolapse, PID ( pelvic inflammatory disease), UTI, bowel disorder, ovarian cyst, etc. This is not to be neglected.

3. Abnormal Vaginal discharge: Any abnormal discharge from the vagina could be indicative of a bacterial infection. The color, consistency, and odor of the discharge play a key role in making the correct diagnosis.

4. Pain in genitals: The reasons for pain, burning, itching or any swelling in the genitals can range from a mild yeast infection to a full-blown STD (sexually transmitted disease). Also, pain during sex can have many underlying causes and should be attended to at the earliest.

5. Breast disorders: In case of painless or painful lumps, tenderness in the breasts, change in the skin over the breasts or any discharge from the nipples, a complete breast examination should be done by a doctor. In view of the increasing incidences of breast cancer, monthly breast self-examination is advisable especially after the age of 30.

The importance of being vigilant about our health cannot be overemphasized. I really admire Angelina Jolie and consider her a role model for all ladies as far as our health goes.

Be aware of your body patterns.

Beware of any unexplained changes.
