Q: What is a Menopause?

Menopause is a Natural Biological Process; that occurs in all women with age. At this time; Menstural period stops permanently and a woman can no longer get pregnant.

Q: What does it occurs?

It is a gradual process, that occurs with age; just like Puberty; it mainly occurs around 50 yrs of age. If it occurs before age of 40; it is known as "premature menopause".

Q: What is the cause of menopause?

The cause is aging; there is an imbalance in sex hormones; while causes fluctuation in periods.
It could also be because of removal of uterus (Hysterectomy).
Cancer therapies like Chemotherapy& radiotherapy can induce menopause.
Sometimes ovaries fail to produce normal levels of reproductive hormones known as Primary Ovarian Insufficiency.
Smoking, Drinking also induce early menopause.
Other causes are Surgical removal of ovaries, uterus and fallopian tubes.

Q: How will I feel during menopause?

You will observe sudden changes in body;
  1. Vaginal dryness
  2. Painful intercourse
  3. Back & joint pain
  4. hot flushes
  5. Dryness & Itching of skin
  6. Breast pain & enlargement
  7. Heavy night sweats
  8. Weight Gain
  9. Anxiety & dizziness
  10. Mood Swings
  11. Low interest in sexual activity
  12. Disturbed Sleep

Q: How will I know, if I am starting menopause?

You will notice changes in monthly period cycle as hormones begin to fluctuate. But you can get pregnant during menopause transition; until complete menopause is achieved. So be careful!

Q: Do I need to see a doctor?

You do not need any medical help; as its not a disease but if symptoms are bothering you, then you should talk to your doctor for easy management of menopause.

Q: What is the management of menopause?

If symptoms are mild; you will be able to manage it yourself, but if symptoms are interfering with your day to day activiy, then you might need medical assistance:-
  1. HRT (Hormonal Replacement Therapy) - It is available as cream/gel or in a tablet or skin patch, it helps in treating hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal and urinary tract infections.
  2. Tibolone - It is a synthetic man-made hormone, to improve sexual drive and other symptoms.
  3. Vaginal Lubricants - to reduce vaginal dryness.
  4. Low-dose antidepressants.
  5. Annual examination of medication dosage, breast screening along with other investigations are very necessary for healthy living.

Q: Do I have any alternative cure?

As the symptoms are temporary; these will subside with age; but you can follow these steps to prevent its effects:-
  1. Sleep well
  2. Exercise.
  3. Avoid drinking alcohol / Smoking.
