GENITAL HERPES<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Genital herpes is a viral Sexually Transmitted Disease caused by Herpes Simplex Virus- Type 1 and 2.<\/p>\n

Mainly producing sores or blisters on the infected area, this disease is common among sexually active people.<\/p>\n

Predominance:<\/strong><\/p>\n

-Equally prevalent in both men and women<\/p>\n

-More common among age groups of 14-50 yrs.<\/p>\n

-It usually affects sexually active people.<\/p>\n

Spreads through:<\/strong><\/p>\n

-Direct contact with the infected fluids (saliva, semen, vaginal discharges)<\/p>\n

-Oral\/anal\/unprotected sex with an infected individual<\/p>\n

-Mother to a baby through pregnancy or nursing<\/p>\n

-Skin contact with the infected person.<\/p>\n

Symptoms:<\/strong><\/p>\n

-A virus can stay latent for years after infection without producing any symptoms.<\/p>\n

-The dormant virus can become active easily producing symptomatic outbreaks.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 In men and women:<\/strong><\/p>\n

– Painful blisters or sores on the affected area usually the penis or vagina<\/p>\n

– Pain during urination<\/p>\n

– Itching, redness or tingling on genitals<\/p>\n

– Flu-like symptoms such as fatigue, fever, backache<\/p>\n

– Swollen lymph nodes<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 In babies:<\/strong><\/p>\n

– Ulcers on the face, genitals or the entire body<\/p>\n

– Complications may lead to blindness, damage to the brain or even death<\/p>\n

Prevention:<\/strong><\/p>\n

– No sex is the best way to avoid the passing of the infection.<\/p>\n

– Using condoms does not offer 100% protection as the virus may pass on from the nerve endings on the skin.<\/p>\n

– Avoid kissing if sores present in the mouth<\/p>\n

– In case of sharing sex toys, wash them properly and cover them with a condom before use.<\/p>\n
