This bacterium usually, infects the moist areas of the body such as the genitals, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, anus, throat, mouth or even eyes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prevalence:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More common in females<\/li>\n<li>The disease of the sexually active group<\/li>\n<li>can occur along with <a href=\"https:\/\/drsafehands.com\/sexually-transmitted-disease\/symptoms-and-treatment-of-chlamydia\">Chlamydia infection<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Sexually active teenagers and young adults are more prone to gonorrhea<\/li>\n<li>predisposes one to other STDs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Spread through:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Similar to other STDs, Gonorrhea spreads mainly through sexual contact<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unprotected vaginal sex with an infected person<\/li>\n<li>Oral or anal sex<\/li>\n<li>Sex with multiple partners<\/li>\n<li>From mother to baby<\/li>\n<li>Contact with the infected discharges\/fluids<\/li>\n<li>Gay or bisexual relationship<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Symptoms:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Apart from being asymptomatic, gonorrhea can produce the following symptoms within few days to a month after exposure to the bacteria.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Yellowish\/greenish discharge from the genitals<\/li>\n<li>Pain in passing urine<\/li>\n<li>Pain during or after sex<\/li>\n<li>Pain in anus\/vagina\/penis<\/li>\n<li>Abnormal discharge from rectum or urethra<\/li>\n<li>Bleeding in between menses<\/li>\n<li>Soreness or burning in throat<\/li>\n<li>Pain in eyes or conjunctivitis.<\/li>\n<li>swelling of genitals<\/li>\n<li>Baby born of an infected mother may suffer from blindness or life-threatening infection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If not treated on time, it may lead to pelvic inflammatory diseases (PID) in females leading to infertility or ectopic pregnancy. In males too, it may cause infertility or prostate cancer.
