It\u2019s medication for HIV.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh! What do they do? So I\u2019m assuming PEP should be taken immediately?\u201d enquired the girl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYes!\u201d responded the Doctor, \u201cPEP must be taken within 72 hours for it to be effective. PEP must be taken if your condom breaks, you\u2019ve had unprotected sex or shared needles with someone with HIV.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnderstood\u2026 And is PrEP a part of PEP?\u201d prodded the young girl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-3 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"788\" data-id=\"2929\" src=\"https:\/\/drsafehands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/PEP-and-PrEP-bottles-.png\" alt=\"PEP and PrEP for HIV\" class=\"wp-image-2929\" srcset=\"https:\/\/drsafehands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/PEP-and-PrEP-bottles-.png 940w, https:\/\/drsafehands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/PEP-and-PrEP-bottles--300x251.png 300w, https:\/\/drsafehands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/PEP-and-PrEP-bottles--768x644.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo dear\u2026 PrEP for HIV means Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis and involves medication to be taken on a regular basis by at-risk people to avoid HIV infection.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo before getting infected? How does one know they\u2019re at risk though?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re at risk if your partner is HIV positive, if you regularly have unprotected sex or if you share syringes with at-risk or infected people,\u201d the Doctor continued, \u201cPrEP prevents HIV from taking hold and spreading in your body. PrEP is highly effective when taken properly and consistently as directed by your medical practitioner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo are these medicines injected or\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re pill-based,\u201d The Doctor completed the girl\u2019s statement for her. \u201cThey must be taken every day.
